AKC Canine Good Citizen — Responsible Owners, Well-Mannered Dogs!

The AKC's Canine Good Citizen (CGC) program is recognized as the gold standard for dog behavior and is a prerequisite for therapy dog certification. It is also increasingly becoming required by apartments and condos as a prerequisite for residency. The AKC Canine Good Citizen certification is a 10-step test performed by an AKC Canine Good Citizen evaluator and requires your dog to demonstrate confidence and control in specific situations to earn the CGC title. The test consists of the following:

  • Accept a friendly stranger
  • Sit politely for petting
  • Appearance and ability to be groomed
  • Walk on a loose leash
  • Walk through a crowd politely
  • Come when called
  • React to another dog politely
  • React to distractions with confidence
  • Sit and down on command/staying in place
  • Demonstrate confidence when separated from his owner for 3 minutes

What is the Canine Good Citizen Test?

The American Kennel Club's Canine Good Citizen test is a friendly, non-competitive, and casual evaluation that rewards pet dogs that act mannerly at home and in the community. All dogs that pass the CGC test receive an official certificate from the American Kennel Club and are automatically recorded in the AKC's Canine Good Citizen Archive. All tests are performed on leash. Owners may talk to their dogs throughout the test.

Who Can Participate in This Program?

EVERY dog is welcome - pedigreed champions and the pooch next door! All dogs, including both purebred and mixed breed dogs, can participate in the CGC program. There is no age limit. We believe a dog can never be too old to become a good citizen.

Client Testimonials

"My husband and I adopted our dog, Piper, from a shelter in May of 2001. She was an active dog, and had been through a lot. We knew she needed training and enrolled her in the Fine Canine Obedience program. In the first 6 weeks of training, I saw a transformation. The calmness that came over her was amazing. Piper could do what we asked. She was less stressed, because she could now understand us. We were less stressed because we could understand her. Training became fun for her, and her eyes would light up when she got to class. I was (and still am) impressed with how well Monica understood our dog's behavior. She knew a solution for any situation Piper threw at us (she threw us quite a few interesting ones) and her ideas have always worked. We continued through the advanced obedience classes and Piper passed the AKC's Canine Good Citizen test. We just adopted Duchess, another rescue and have enrolled her into The Fine Canine program. We are having a baby in September and we need the peace of mind that our dog is trained. To anyone I would recommend The Fine Canine's program. Their training is the best thing you can do for your dog."
